Visit prisons reveals harrowing conditions and structural problems

The ongoing crisis in Belgium's prisons is once again causing unrest among prison staff. Unions complain of structural problems such as overcrowding, unsafe working conditions and a chronic shortage of resources and staff. Satisfaction with lawyers scores high

The vast majority of Flemings who have already needed a lawyer are satisfied with the service provided. This is according to a survey by iVOX. Lawyers receive an average score of 7.3 out of 10 for private cases and 7.6 out of 10 for professional cases - a clear 'distinction'. Nevertheless, clients still see room for improvement, especially in terms of transparency about costs and communication.

Class in court: pupils argue own lawsuit

On Monday 24 March 2025, pupils of the fifth and sixth years of primary school De Esdoorn from Hombeek had a unique opportunity to experience the workings of justice up close. During an educational role-play in the court of Mechelen, they took on the role of judge, lawyer, defendant and prosecutor. This is part of the Advocaat op School project, which interactively introduces children to the workings of the rule of law and the crucial role a lawyer plays in it.
