Testament

Upon your death, the law basically determines who inherits your assets. However, if you want to deviate from these rules, because you want some assets to go to a person with whom you have a close relationship, such as a friend or your de facto cohabiting partner who does not normally inherit, you can make a will.

There are different types of wills, each with their advantages and disadvantages. What is essential is that you record your will in writing. After all, an oral will is not valid. You can also keep going back to your previous will if you have changed your mind.

Do I need a lawyer for a will?

A lawyer can go through the different types of wills with you and explain the options you have to benefit the person who would not normally inherit from you by law. They know better than anyone where the snags are and what problems can arise if the will is not drawn up correctly and clearly.
