What is the Public Prosecution Service?

The Public Prosecution Service, the Public Prosecution Service or the Prosecutor's Office are all three names for the same institution. This is a body that is part of the judiciary.

People suspected of committing a criminal offence have to deal with the public prosecutor's office. The OM is the body in Belgium that can bring suspects before the criminal courts. The public prosecutor ensures that offences are detected and prosecuted. This body's first duty is to ensure that the democratic rule of law and the public interest remain defended. Therefore, the public prosecutor's office gives a proportionate and socially relevant response to each established crime within an acceptable timeframe, taking into account the interest of the victims.
