Legal advice? AI is not an alternative to a lawyer
AI is increasingly being used for legal advice. But this is not without risk: recent court rulings show that errors by AI can harm your case as well as cause additional costs.
Artificial intelligence cannot replace a real lawyer
Increasingly, people think that artificial intelligence, or AI, makes it easy to get good legal advice. But that is not true. Recent decisions by courts of law make it clear that AI cannot replace a lawyer's work. Litigants who use AI for legal documents can sometimes even end up with more costs.
Why AI is not enough
AI can sometimes give an initial idea, but does not always understand the details or rules of court. Especially free AI tools can make mistakes or even make up information. Such errors are called "hallucinations".
If you use such ai-generated documents in court, judges may find that your trial becomes unnecessarily complicated. That happened in recent months, for example at the Antwerp Court of Appeal and the Council of State. In such cases, the costs for the litigant may even increase.
Why a lawyer does help
A lawyer has the right education and experience and knows how the court works. Such a professional can lay out your case clearly and correctly and avoid mistakes that could cost you money and time later on.
Even those who cannot afford a lawyer can get legal help through the "Pro bono" system. Thus, anyone can get a lawyer if needed.
In short: AI can sometimes give you an initial idea, but a real lawyer will make sure your case is done correctly, clearly and safely.
