Chiara Kerckhof wins prestigious thesis award
Chiara Kerckhof obtained 18 out of 20 for her master's thesis "Truth finding in civil procedure. The duty of truth and completeness on behalf of litigants". With that master's thesis, she has now won our thesis prize worth 2,500 euros.
Our spokesperson Sofie Demeyer interviewed Chiara Kerckhof about her master's thesis. Among other things, she formulates the necessary recommendations to Belgian legislators and the courts , but she also talks about her future plans and what she wants to do with the money from the thesis prize.
What is her master's thesis about?
In her master's thesis, Chiara highlights the obligation whereby litigants in civil proceedings must present the facts of a case to the judge in all completeness and all truth so that the judge can make a decision in line with the objective and material truth of a case.
There is currently no truth or completeness obligation in Belgian procedural law. Chiara Kerckhof examined how the Netherlands, Germany and Britain deal with this duty of truth and completeness, and it is precisely because of this extensive legal comparison that the OVB felt Chiara deserved the thesis award.
Moreover, the master's thesis is extremely clear and smoothly written.
Although Chiara's master's thesis does not zoom in specifically on the role of the lawyer and the influence of a truth and completeness obligation on his way of working, the practical relevance of her exposition is nevertheless an asset for you as a lawyer.
What does this thesis award stand for?
With the thesis prize, the professional association of Flemish lawyers aims to build a bridge between the world of lawyers and students. We encourage students to devote their master's thesis to the legal profession or the organisation and functioning of justice. That is why we award an annual prize worth €2,500 to the student who produces the best work on the legal profession.
